Marble Mountains is a famous scenic site consisting of six limestone peaks rising from a sandy coastal area, covering approximately 2 km², about 8 km southeast of Da Nang city center. The area is renowned for its majestic and sacred beauty, combining mountains, clouds, sea, and numerous mysterious caves.
The name "Marble Mountains" (Ngu Hanh Son) is based on the Eastern Five Elements theory, representing Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth. These elements were assigned to five of the limestone peaks in this scenic complex. The name was given by King Minh Mang in 1837, symbolizing universal balance and harmony, while reflecting the natural formation and positions of the mountains.
Specifically, the king named the five main peaks as follows: Kim Son (Metal Mountain), Moc Son (Wood Mountain), Thuy Son (Water Mountain), Hoa Son (Fire Mountain), and Tho Son (Earth Mountain). Hoa Son actually has two adjacent peaks, called Duong Hoa Son and Am Hoa Son. The collective name for the group is Ngu Hanh Son – Marble Mountains.
