The Da Nang Cathedral stands out with its distinctive Gothic architecture, captivating visitors with its classic and elegant beauty. This structure is not only a historical symbol but also offers a unique sightseeing experience in the bustling city center.
Da Nang Cathedral also known as "Chicken Church", Da Nang Cathedral is a prominent Gothic architectural structure located right in the heart of the city. With its bright pink facade, red tiled roof and soaring bell tower, the church is not only an important religious building but also a cultural icon, attracting countless tourists and photographers to its timeless beauty, in harmony with the modern urban landscape of Da Nang.
Construction of Da Nang Cathedral began in February 1923 and was completed in September 1924. The consecration ceremony was held on September 14 of the same year, dedicating the church to the “Sacred Heart of Jesus.”
Originally called “Tourane Church” (named after Da Nang’s former French colonial name), the cathedral later became popularly known as the “Rooster Church” due to the rooster-shaped weathervane atop its bell tower, which also serves as a lightning rod.
On January 18, 1963, when the Diocese of Da Nang was established, the church was chosen as the Cathedral, becoming the central place of worship for the diocese.
The Cathedral showcases classic Gothic design, evident in its pointed arches that create a sense of height and grace. Solid supporting columns uphold the large vaulted roof, adding grandeur and solemnity while allowing the interior space to remain open and airy. The cruciform floor plan further reflects the traditional Gothic layout of Western Catholic churches.
Inside, colorful stained-glass windows depict biblical stories, blending artistic beauty with cultural exchange between Vietnam and the West. The interior décor is simple yet solemn, with finely carved details and decorative patterns that create a sacred, tranquil atmosphere.
The most distinctive feature of the cathedral is the rooster atop the bell tower. Beyond serving as a wind direction indicator and lightning rod, it gives the church its beloved nickname, “Rooster Church.”
Built in French Gothic style, the cathedral features pointed arches, stained-glass windows, and intricate decorative motifs. Painted in pastel pink, the building exudes both historic charm and romantic elegance. The alloy rooster atop the bell tower symbolizes the biblical story of Saint Peter’s repentance after denying Jesus three times before the rooster crowed.
With its distinctive design and striking colors, the cathedral is an ideal spot for photography. Visitors can take impressive shots from the façade, bell tower, or detailed interior decorations. During Christmas, the cathedral is beautifully decorated, creating a festive and cozy atmosphere.
Located behind the cathedral, this grotto was modeled after the Lourdes Grotto in France. It provides a serene, sacred space where visitors can pause to pray and reflect, away from the city’s hustle and bustle.
Da Nang Cathedral leaves a lasting impression with its refined Gothic design and cultural significance. A visit here offers not only an appreciation of architectural beauty but also a sense of peace and reverence in the heart of a vibrant city.
