Officially named the “Christ the King Cathedral”, or “Cathédrale du Christ-Roi” in French, Nha Trang Mountain Church is a prominent Catholic cathedral located in the heart of the city. Locally, it’s often referred to as Stone Church, Mountain Church, or simply Nga Sau Church due to its location near a six-way intersection.

Back in 1885, Nha Trang was just a small fishing village with scattered settlements. Religious gatherings were held by a small group of local Catholics at the Cho Moi Parish.

When the French colonial government established control in the region a year later, major institutions such as the Pasteur Institute and the Institute of Oceanography were built. A modest seaside chapel was also erected to serve the religious needs of local Catholics and French residents.

By 1928, Father Louis Vallet (1869–1945) began constructing a new church to accommodate the growing Catholic population. The church we now know as Nha Trang Mountain Church was completed around 1933.

Measuring 36 meters in length, 20 meters in width, and standing 12 meters tall, the Mountain Church boasts a robust layout built from concrete blocks shaped to resemble stone – hence the nickname Stone Church. The church is divided into three main sections:

The bell tower houses two bronze bells made by the famous French bellmaker Bourdon Carillond, tuned to A (La) and E♭ (Mi Diminished). When rung, their sound reverberates across the surrounding area, adding to the church’s mystical ambiance.

At the top of the bell tower sits a large four-faced clock, visible from all directions, acting as a local timekeeper for nearby residents.
